5 Popular Techniques Used for Roof Cooling in Pakistan
Permalink

Countries like Pakistan, France, and Sweden lie in the temperate zone with moderate mean annual temperatures of 10oC to 20oC. These conditions induce heat island effects, increase in greenhouse gases, and loss of human lives (heat strokes) in certain regions of a country, forcing homeowners and businesses to think for viable solutions. Covering roofs with cool, reflective paint is an example. Beat the heat with our solution roof cooling in Pakistan. Enhance indoor comfort and energy efficiency.

  1. Metal Roofs

Cool metal roofs are sustainable coverings that lasts for 40-70 years. There are various types of metal roofing:

  • Unpainted metal
  • Prepainted metal
  • Granular-coated metal

These roofs are well-ventilated, reflective, and easy to insulate. Some of them are covered with ‘cool pigment’ technology, a layer that offers high solar reflectance and infrared emittance. Moreover, granular coating enhances emissivity up to 90%. This roof is 100% recyclable at the end of its useful life.

Characteristics of Metal Roofing

  • Durable
  • Low Weight
  • Fire Resistance
  • Higher Aesthetics
  • Wind Resistance
  1. Use Shingles

For steep-slope roofs, residents can select from various asphalt shingles. In hot summers, cool roof shingles are preferred over other types. These shingles contain reflective granules to better reflect sunlight. Shingles made from polymer, wood, and metal can also be layered for better heat reflectance. Others are designed to be pervious, allowing for better air movement. Opt for light-colored shingles (high heat emittance) in the summer season and vice versa.

  1. Coat Cool Paint

Reflective coatings are preferable for low-sloped roofs. These liquid membranes are divided into two categories:

  • Cementitious coatings
  • Elastomeric coatings

Both coatings enhance the solar reflectance of the roof. The difference remains in the application: Cementitious coating can be applied over an existing cooling layer while elastomeric needs a fresh surface. These coverings are sprayed, rolled, or brushed accordingly.

Benefits of Elastomeric Coatings

  • Energy efficient
  • UV-resistant
  • Flexible
  • Longer Lifespan

Benefits of Cementitious Coatings

  • Durable
  • Cost-Effective
  • Chemical-Resistant
  • Reduction in Structural Damage
  1. Single-Ply Membrane

Single-ply membranes are prefabricated plastic or vinyl sheets containing solar reflective coatings or materials. These sheets are placed on the roof deck and adhered to the structure with fasteners, gravel, or pavers. It does not require any additional coating or surfacing.

Some common types include:

  • PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride)
  • EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer)
  • TPO (Thermoplastic Polyolefin)

N.B. Not all single-ply membranes are cool roof products.

  1. Green Roofs – Roof Cooling In Pakistan

Green roofs play a significant part in reducing heat island effect. It provides shade, reduce temperatures, and restrict heat from entering the structure. The temperature of green roofs is 30-40% lower than conventional roofs. Moreover, it can lower ambient temperatures by 5oF. There are two types of green roofs: Extensive and Intensive.

Extensive green roofs possess soil depth of 2-4 inches. It requires low structural support because of its lightweighted nature. Lastly, extensive green roofs require low maintenance.

Intensive green roofs are more complex. It comprises plants, such as shrubs and herbs, as well as trees. It resembles conventional gardens or parks. Since it is heavier, the structural support needs to be more. Intensive green roofs require high investments and more maintenance.
