Even though I'm a soldier by trade, I've never liked war and have only ever supported it as a means of preserving peace. Ulysses S. Grant was an average student who graduated 21st out of 39 students from West Point in 1843. Grant was given the position of regimental quartermaster in the United States Army, despite the fact that he was a respected horseman who appeared to be an ideal fit for the cavalry. During the Mexican-American War, he held the position of quartermaster and was awarded two brevets for bravery. confederate pension records
